Christmas is over. New Year’s has come and gone. Now we start to huddle in for the winter. We begin to suffer Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

What are the symptoms you may ask? You know you’re suffering from SAD is you find yourself a little grumpier, a little crankier and bit more tired.

So what can be done about the winter blues, is there a cure? Well I say, “Let’s look through the windshield and not the review view mirror.” Look ahead to the start of spring. No more winter blues!

Most people believe the first sign of spring is the robin hopping around pulling at that stubborn worm in the ground. For me, the end of the winter blues and the start of my spring bliss begins when I see the banner of St. Patrick floating down Morristown’s South Street in front of thousands of smiling faces.

For the last 33 years, the Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade has helped usher in spring. This year will be no different. The St. Patrick’s Parade Committee and our 2012 Grand Marshal, Rich Smith, are very excited about this year’s event. For the past few months they have been eagerly working away to present one of New Jersey’s largest family oriented parades.

There will be 20 bands, 12 floats and approximately 3,000 participants. More than 60,000 spectators are anticipated. Marching in the parade are more than 125 organizations.

What would a parade be without Irish step dancers and bagpipe bands? The Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade is proud of having more bands than the Rose Bowl Parade, and 11 of them are pipe and drum bands.

But there is so much more to the parade than that.

The Denville String Band is a mummers band with bright sequined costumes and large feather “back pieces.” Wild West City will have a float with rough desperados, cowboys and gorgeous horses. Speaking of horses, the Wells Fargo stage coach will be riding down South Street behind their horses.

The DeLorean Entertainment Group will be back with the Warner Bros. Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, as seen in the movie Arthur. Skating down South Street will be the Corporal Punishers, a ladies roller derby team.  Morris Township’s own Seeing Eye dogs will be there, too.

The countdown begins! Get ready to shake off the winter blues. Only 25 days till the first sign of spring: The Morris County St. Patrick’s Parade, March 10 at noon.
